Ah yes, the summer camping trip, the great outdoors, campfires, usually a wonderful experience. But things can get a little tricky out there at the mercy of Mother Nature. So here are 10 fantastic camping hacks to make your camping getaway great.

  1. Use interlocking foam tiles for a cushy & comfy tent floor. It makes “roughing it” way less rough, wall-to-wall.

  2. Strap a headlamp onto a clear plastic gallon jug of water to fill your entire tent with cozy ambient light and maybe a romantic touch too.

  3. Make (portable) tin can sandwich bread. Get the recipe here.

  4. Glue a piece of sandpaper to the top of your match holder. Be sure to buy strike-anywhere matches and with this clever add-on you know they’ll strike right here.

  5. Repurpose a coffee can to hold and shield your toilet paper from the elements.

  6. Use an empty laundry detergent dispenser as a hand-washing station. Just fill it with water and wash up.

  7. Strap an old belt around a tree, add some hooks, and hang up your pots and pans. This works great when camping!

  8. Have pancakes for breakfast using a pre-made pancake mix (shortening and dry milk) that doesn’t need to be refrigerated. Get the recipe here.

  9. Make a portable “washing machine” (and it only works as hard as you do) with just a bucket and a plunger. It costs about $6 and takes like 10 minutes to make, use the directions here.

  10. Fire-flavor your veggies & meat, minus the messy marinade. Once your charcoals are all gray and ashy, cover them directly with fresh rosemary branches. Your meat and veggies will be flavored and filled with the taste of savory herbs, yum!
